The new popular need for a Bug Box in the garden, is in-fact a sad reflection of the modern trend for clean and tidy, almost horticulturally sterile gardens. The sight of any bugs sends some people running for the bug spray. When in truth there are good bugs and bad bugs, and all bugs are food for something. The decline in the numbers of Lacewings and Ladybirds is evidence of this trend. But these 'good' bugs thrive on the aphids which ruin our roses.
Putting up a Bug Tower or Bug Box will not make a huge difference to the balance good bugs and bad bugs in your garden. But, trying to give them a secure home during winter should make you feel better. And if your Bug Box looks like an ornament to add to the wind chimes and bird table, why not. Especially popular with kids, why not buy a Bug Box for your nephews birthday to put up in their mum's garden. All boys love bugs.
